At a Town of Oyster Bay Regular Board Meeting held this past Tuesday, Feb. 27, a hearing was called to consider the creation of a new fire district in the unincorporated area of the Town of Oyster Bay adjacent to the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale.
Six homes in the area, in the unincorporated Village of Farmingdale, have been serviced by the Farmingdale Fire Department even though the homeowners had been paying taxes to the South Farmingdale district.
Upon realizing this, both the Town of Oyster Bay and the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale agreed to continue providing these six homes with service from the Farmingdale Fire Department, given that the homeowners agreed to pay the necessary taxes to the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale instead of South Farmingdale. The South Farmingdale district agreed to stop collecting taxes from the homeowners who will now pay them to the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale.
While the homes technically are not part of the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale, they will continue to be serviced by the Farmingdale Fire Department and will now pay their taxes to the Incorporated Village.
For taxing purposes, the six homes will be considered to be located in a new fire district, the "North East Farmingdale Fire Protection District," although they will be serviced in the same manner as all other homes in the Incorporated Village of Farmingdale. The new name for the district was created strictly for taxing purposes.
The decision to create the new district was reserved at the Town Board meeting and a decision from the board should be released in the near future.
