Pokress, a longtime high school teacher in North Massapequa, died on Jan. 17, 2001, of complications from congestive heart failure. She was 77. She was a science teacher in Plainedge High School for over 25 years and was the publisher of the Observer Newspapers for 27 years. She was a former president of the NC Press Association and the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce and a Senior First Aid Instructor for the American Red Cross. She was one of the first teachers hired for the Plainedge High School. She received her bachelor's degree in education from Hunter College and her master's degree from Columbia University. She began her teaching career in the NYC school system before moving to North Massapequa in 1954. She is survived by her husband Jackson. She was a devoted mother and mother-in-law of Robert and Susan of Andover, MA, and David and Hope of Farmingdale. She was a devoted grandmother of Matthew, Rebecca and Sean and a great-grandmother of Elizabeth. She was a fond sister of Richard and Sylvia Cutler. She was buried at Calverton National Cemetery.
