One of your front page articles in last week's Observer, "Republican Legislators Denounce Gulotta," is very revealing.
In that article, Republican Minority Leader Peter Schmitt says that the Republican legislators will not support Gulotta because of "their constituents' responses to Gulotta's political ads." Mr. Schmitt goes on to acknowledge that "under Gulotta's administration Nassau had been downgraded to the lowest bond rating of any county in the state."
By his own admission, Mr. Schmitt and his fellow Republican legislators are only dropping their support because of their constituents' complaints. However, they were quite willing to support Gulotta's irresponsible fiscal policies for all the years that they were part of the Republican legislative majority under Gulotta. All those past years they did not care at all about the fiscal health of the county for which they were serving as legislators.
