Senator Charles Fuschillo recently announced that his legislation to strengthen state law against the illegal purchase of alcohol by underage people has been signed into law.

The new law prevents minors from using fraudulent out-of-state licenses to buy alcohol. Current law mandates that a minor who uses a false or fraudulent New York State driver's license to buy alcohol is subject to a penalty such as a three month driver's license suspension. There was no such penalty before.

"New York State has enacted strong laws to limit minors' access to alcohol, and it is important to ensure that they permit effective enforcement. This law would close the loophole and authorize enforcement of the law where an out-of-state license is used," said Fuschillo.
