Farmingdale resident Jason Burzynski had the drive nearly five years ago to start a website design company. After years of trying to get the business booming, Sublime Design took off about a year ago, and is still attempting to get higher off the ground.
Sublime Design does a whole range of Internet technology work, with website design as their core service. They cover a variety of Internet services, including Internet promotion and consulting work. They help people with existing websites by offering advice on how to improve the site and also provide assistance in data centers and configuring infrastructure. The company also offers online application development, website hosting, e-commerce, e-mail management, domain name registration, and intranet development.
"We like to say we can help you with anything having to do with technology. If we can't help you, we'll admit we can't help you, and we'll find somebody who can," Burzynski said.
Burzynski started the company by himself over four years ago in his hometown of Farmingdale. Computers were always a hobby for him and it was just a natural evolution to go from working with computers to learning more about them and ultimately understanding how they operate.
Opening his first business in Farmingdale, Burzynski sold computers and accessories to local residents and nearby companies. When this didn't prosper as he has planned, he started to get more involved with the service end of the industry. He helped people set up networks and and focused upon learning the interactions of computer systems. Soon after he received his first client, and took it from there. "My first client really helped me learn what this work is all about," Burzynski said.
About a year ago, he aquired a working partner to join his venture. Shortly after, the business hired Jennifer Freedman, who became their public relations representative. Burzynski credits her for bringing the business into the public eye. Since her employment Sublime Design has increased their customer pool through both word of mouth and press releases.
"With her help, we got involved with the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce and other associations. Really through her efforts we were able to get the exposure we needed to be as successful as we are now."
Since starting with the company and acting as their PR person, Freedman became the company's lead developer and vice president. She was recently certified by the Allaire Corporation as a ColdFusion developer. The Allaire certification demonstrates to Sublime Design's customers and colleagues that the company employs developers with the specialized knowledge and skill required to effectively develop and deploy ColdFusion applications. Through her years of experience and training, Freedman has proven to be one of the top ColdFusion programmers on Long Island and is among the first developers worldwide to become an Allaire Certified Professional.
The Allaire Certified Professional Program was launched in June of this year to recognize select web developers for their expertise in developing and deploying online applications with technologies in the Allaire Business Platform. Certification is achieved by passing a challenging examination and proper training.
With next year being their fifth anniversary, Sublime Design currently consists of seven employees and they are constantly looking for additional qualified people to join their team. The first few years of the company's existence they learned about how the business works and only recently have developed a true understanding of what websites are all about. Burzynski said he just spent the first couple of years taking on a few clients to be able to pay the bills.
"To build someone a website you really have to understand the business that they do, so every client I get is a different thing to explore. It's really very interesting."
Through their success, Sublime Design has expanded from an idea in Burzynski's head to the technology incubator at Briarcliff College in Bethpage. They have been there since February, and are planning to move into an office space twice the size of their current space by November.
As with any new business, Sublime Design has run into some difficulties along the way. Financial challenges are commonplace with start up businesses, but Burzynski says he's not too worried about that.
"I know that if I can't pay myself for a couple of weeks, I'll survive. That's no big deal to me." Burzynski went on to say that the only true worry he is presently experiencing is getting more qualifiesemployees. While his company has certainly grown throughout the last few years, the main concern is finding a passionate and adequate work staff.
"My biggest problem is finding good help; finding people who are valuable to the team. I would trade all my money for the best people who are out there. My key focus right now is to find that winning team I need to keep this up and going."
