The two best teams so far this season in the new senior league met last Sunday with first place on the line. Both the Garden city A team, composed of all eighth graders and the Farmingdale Flames entered the game undefeated. At the conclusion of an extremely well-played and exciting game, it was the Flames who remained in sole possession of first place and undefeated in top of the LI Senior Girls Lacrosse League with a 16-11 victory.

Twelve of the twenty-one Farmingdale girls either scored or assisted with goals to highlight the team orientation of the flames. Julia Ryan again led the scoring with four goals, at times being almost unstoppable. Kate Hogun broke in to the scoring with four goals and did very well at the center position on her midfield line, according to caches. Lauren Cohen had big offensive game with two goals and two assists. Heather Hoglund, Bridget Kenna, Patricia Santorelli, Jess Fitzpatrick and Megan White each scored one goal a piece. Meghan Fanning scored one goal with two assists and had numerous interceptions as well as controlling her center draws. Stacey McPartland had one of her better games recording three outstanding assists from her attack positions. Vicki Fanslow scored one goal and had one assist.

The down low defense was again led by the hustle of Sookie Wientzen, who was celebrating her birthday, Krista Daniello and Jess Fitzpatrick. Also playing defensive was Jess Cohen, Jess Miller and Katie Quinn. The Magri sisters, Caitlin and Colleen also had a good game. Caitlin came up with a number of ground balls in the defensive end at critical times in the game and both played well. Jenna Celano and Jessica Carvo contributed to the transitional game and midfield play.

Once again Diana Beltrani was the ultimate difference in the Flames win making 18 saves in goal against some of the best players in the league. at one critical point in the game, with the score tied at eleven, Diana, a team captain, called a timeout to get her team going. It worked because the Flames came out of that timeout and in the last six minutes outscored the strong Garden City team, 5-0. Beltrani refused to let Garden City score, making a number of critical saves in the last few minutes. Farmingdale had led at half time, eight minutes. It was the Flames', heart, skill and athletic ability, which, combines with their team spirit to earn their sixth victory of the year.

On Saturday, the Farmingdale PAL Spirit played Port Washington in a Division I rookie league match-up of third and fourth grade girls teams. The team went to Port Washington, undefeated at 4-0 and the girls moved the ball remarkably well for third and fourth graders and continue to grow as girls' teams. The team went to Port Washington undefeated, at 4-0 and returned 5-0 after a strong 9-2 victory. The Spirit are truly shining as a team and learning the game. One of the caches of the Port Washington rookie team, who is the former Manhasset High School Varsity girls team coach and is in the LI Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Pam Monfort, told the Spirit coach after the game that the Farmingdale players pass and catch beautifully and that they played a great game.

Candace Rossi led the scoring with three goals and one assist, Melissa Maer also had a good scoring game with two goals. Katie Wood and Alyssa Dorsey each had a goal with two assists. Carolyn Psillos and Jackie Gunn each scored one goal. Shannon Haas had another excellent game and had one assist.

Emily Fugarazzo and Julianne Cona again shared the goal tending duties extremely well and played the field just as well when they were not in the goal. Tara Coyle, continues to shine as a strong midfielder. Joanie Buczkowski also did great work both offensively and defensively. Shea Macagnone came up with a bunch of ground balls, made numerous excellent catches, and had a number of good scoring opportunities. Lauren Prinipiato, Chelsea Bianco, and Katie Sutherland also had some excellent ground and ball pick-ups and made big contributions to the win by maintaining Farmingdale ball control.
