A late night drive through East Farmingdale in a stolen car, became tragically unforgettable on May 9. Several young teenagers were in a stolen car with an alleged drunk driver. A 13-year-old boy died when the driver lost control and hit a tree.

At approximately 1:50 a.m., Rhassan Grant of North Amityville was driving a stolen 1988 Honda westbound on Long Island Avenue when he struck a tree in a remote area. Shaborn Legette, of North Amityville was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two other passengers, Rashmel Palmer, 15, and Aaron Woodbury, 13, all of North Amityville, were taken to Brunswick Hospital. As of press time, Palmer was still in critical condition.

No one witnessed the accident, said First Squad Detective James Maher, so details about actual speed or a timeline of events before the car hit the tree are vague. However, evidence gathered at the scene of the accident, leads officials to conclude that the driver was indeed speeding.

"Based on the skid marks and the collision, speeding is definitely a possibility," he said.

Grant, who was also brought to the hospital, was formally charged with driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of stolen property. He was scheduled to appear in First District Court on May 10 for arraignment. The Honda was impounded for a safety check.
