The PAL Farmingdale Flames, of the senior league for seventh and eighth graders, won their second game of the season Saturday to run their record to 2-0 by defeating North Shore 16-5. The team scoring was led by tri-captains Meghan Fanning, who scored four goals with two assists, and Julia Ryan, who had three goals with two assists. Bridget Kenna had two goals and Jess Fitzpatrick had a goal and as assist. Heather Hoglund, Vicki Fanslow, Jessica Patane, Caitlin Magri and Colleen Magri all contributed one goal to the victory.

The game was still relatively close at half-time with Farmingdale leading 7-3. Farmingdale's dominance became evident in the second half as the Flames outscored North Shore 9-2. The Flames coaching staff even put the breaks on the Flames onslaught, making the team run their settled offense while looking to get the ball into the sticks of all the players, especially those who hadn't scored up until that point.

Farmingdale's most impressive aspect of the game was their continued superior defensive play. Players such as Jess Cohen, Sookie Wientzen, Katie Quinn, and Krista Daniello did a great job of doubling opposing players denying them access to the eight meter arc, not giving them any opportunity to take a good shot or any shot at all.

The Farmingdale goaltending was close to spectacular. Colleen Magri played an extremely solid first-half giving up only three goals while making seven saves with a number of them being outstanding ones. Tri-captain Diana Beltrani played the second half and was her spectacular self, making 12 saves while only giving up two goals.

The PAL Spirit, one of Farmingdale's two rookie teams, which plays in Division I, also won their second game of the season beating a very experienced Manhasset team 5-4 in a close and exciting game to go 2-0.

The Spirit and Manhasset were tied at half-time 2-2. Farmingdale took over in the second half scoring three goals while only giving up two in the last couple of minutes. Candace Rossi led the Farmingdale scoring with two goals. Brittany Tuzzolo, Julianne Cona, and Katie Wood each had one goal apiece. Shea Macagnone and Jackie Gunn rounded out the scoring with one assist each.

Julianne Cona and Brittany Tuzzolo split the goaltending duties and were extremely effective. Cona made four saves in the first half while Tuzzolo made five in the second half. Joanie Buczkowski, Emily Fugarazzo, Alyssa Dorsey, Allison Laudage, Lauren Broten, Chelsea Bianco, Lindsay Hoglund, Shannon Haas, Carolyn Psillos, Melissa Maier, Tara Coyle, Lauren Principato and Katie Sutherland all contributed to the victory with their hustle on both offense and defense. Coaches Joe Fanning, Melissa Laudage, and Meghan Fanning are extremely pleased with the team's progress and play in Division I to date.

The second Farmingdale PAL rookie team of third and fourth grade girls opened their season Saturday with a 10-0 win over Carle Place. Katy Wong and Brittany Kohlman split time in goal for the shutout. It was Farmingdale's defense that dominated the game led by Jamie McPartland, Jana Diamond, Brittany Gianino and Nicole Ramos, who thwarted every attempt by Carle Place to enter the critical scoring area.

The center of the field was dominated by Brittany Hushion (one goal), Janine Hillier (two goals), and Codie Weber (two goals). Jackie Mazza, Keriann Garvey, and Julia Castaldi were vital in controlling the ball getting to amost every ground ball first and intercepting numerous passes.

Farmingdale shined in the offensive zone led by Ashley Raso, who had numerous assists and Danielle DiAlto, Victoria Finocchiaro, and Sarah Khalifa who each scored one goal. Lauren Maksym rounded out the scoring with two goals.

Coach Hushion was initially concerned because the team was shorthanded due to the absence of key players Jennifer Troy, Kim Valdini and Regina Bates. Coach Terry McPartland was impressed with the girls' hustle while Coach Weber was impressed with the girls' aggressive play in the steady downpour the game was played in.

The Flames took the field again Sunday making up last weekend's rainout with the Rockville Centre A Team. In a game that was closer than expected, but not as close as the score indicated, RVC scored the opening goal in the first minute and then both teams traded goals giving RVC a 2-1 lead. Farmingdale scored the next four putting the Flames up 5-2. RVC came right back with two to make the score 5-4. Farmingdale again pulled away with three straight goals going up 8-4. Some sloppy Farmingdale play let RVC score a goal with just 14 seconds left to make the score 8-5 at half-time.

In the beginning of the second half Farmingdale scored the first two goals to safely pull away. With two minutes remaining the Flames had a healthy 15-9 lead before giving up two last minute goals which made the score seem closer than it was.

Tri-captain Julia Ryan was awesome, scoring five goals with three assists. Ryan's strength, speed, athletic ability, and skill made her almost unstoppable. Jessica Patane also had a big game filling in at midfield with three goals and two assists. Tri-captain Meghan Fanning again had a very good game with two goals and one assist. Jess Fitzpatrick had a goal and an assist for the second game in a row. Jess Cohen, Katie Quinn, Jenna Celano and Jess Miller each scored once. Patricia Santorelli and Megan White had one assist each.

Jess Carvo, Vicki Fanslow and Heather Hoglund did a great job as usual in the midfield. Bridget Kenna, Krista Daniello, Sookie Wientzen and Vicki Fanslow were very instrumental in the tough Flames defense. Diana Beltrani played a solid game in goal. She made 12 saves keeping her team in the game and allowing them to win it.
