Ovila (Gene) Talbot, retired Scoutmaster of Troop 604, Bethpage, lost his battle with cancer and died on Feb. 20, 2000. Gene was involved with Scouting for his entire life, both as a Boy Scout in Massachusetts and for the last 35 years as an adult leader in Bethpage, serving both as a Cubmaster for younger boys and as a Scoutmaster for older boys. Five years ago, Gene resigned as Scoutmaster of Troop 604 to put his boundless energy into another of his favorite pursuits. Gene has been teaching textile related courses at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC; again molding the lives of young people, his priority in life. During his years as a Scout leader in Bethpage, Gene guided 17 Scouts to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank to be earned in Boy Scouts. Gene will be missed by all of the youth and adults whose lives he has touched over the years. Gene is survived by his wife of 41 years, Cecile; his sons, Joe and John; his daughters-in-law, Coreen and Cindy; four grandchildren, Nadeen, Dylan, Chrissy and Jack; and his brother Robert Talbot.
