In the final game, having locked up the division the week earlier, Farmingdale played a tough and determined Lindenhurst team (second place). Lindenhurst got the early lead (1-0), but with a determined, never give up attitude, a late goal by Brian Harris tied the game at 1-1. The final result was a 1-1 tie to finish an outstanding year. Although led with seven goals by Mike Marino as well as goals by Esteban Yanez, Diego Marcial, Brian Scharp and Ken Petersen, Farmingdale's key to success was a rock solid defense led by Cameron Sweeney, Dan Hornedo and Zahid Ali. They led the league with the fewest goals allowed (6) and amassed four shutouts.
The anchor to defense was the awesome play of goalkeeper and team MVP Andrew Kohlman (five goals allowed). He single-handedly saved many games with his ability and (cat-like) reflexes. Together they never gave up more than one goal in any game. Keeping the ball in the opponent's side of the field was expertly done by the midfield play and assists from Chris Holmes, Dominic Ballas, Robert McNicholl, Mark Wohlsen and Andrew Fisher. Their skill of controlling the ball, and passing set up many scoring opportunities (15 goals) as well as support for the defense.
The coaches noted that the players' hard work and dedication to teamwork and improving their skills paid off for them. They added that they "couldn't be prouder of them, or their accomplishment." The coaches also would like to thank the parents for their dedication and support for the kids and the team and Ernest Inneh (S.I. Vipers) for his time and efforts. "Good luck next in the winter and next season," the coaches concluded.
