The 1999 Farmingdale High School Boys Soccer Team had an extremely successful season. At Adelphi University on Nov. 9, the Dalers set out to accomplish something never done by any Farmingdale soccer team before them. They set out to win the Nassau County Championship.
After 110 minutes of play and 30 minutes of overtime, the championship game between the Dalers and Rockville Centre remained tied, and came down to a shoot-out. Five shooters from each side set up against the goalkeepers. In the end, Rockville Centre won the shoot-out 4-3.
Because the game ended in a tie, both teams became county co-champions, but Rockville Centre advanced to play Suffolk County Champions, East Islip. Farmingdale Junior Defenseman, Eric Rozea said of the shoot-out system, "It's tough to determine the outcome of a game through a shoot-out after 110 minutes of intense play, but that's how the game is."
This is the first county championship ever won by a Farmingdale boys varsity soccer team. Coaches Defendini and Tetelman said they couldn't be happier with their team's performance both during the playoffs and throughout the season. Defendini told his team that this was one of the best seasons any of his teams have ever had, and that the team certainly deserves to be "County Co-champions."
