The Farmingdale Flames U12 girls team rebounded from a tough 2-1 loss to Bay Shore, by defeating a team from Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) this past Saturday, by a score of 1-0.
The Farmingdale girls dominated the play from the outset of the game but were able to score only one goal against a very good POB goaltender. In fact, the opposing keeper made several saves, which kept her team in the game. Not to be outdone, the Flames goaltender, Katie Lyons, was equally impressive. In one outstanding sequence, Katie saved a penalty kick and chased down the rebound to prevent a shot from an oncoming POB player who was left unmarked after the free kick.
The forwards, Ali Lauterborn, Jill D'Andrea, Nicole Cadena and Ally Mulcahy played a solid game and had several opportunities, but they were unable to convert. Halfbacks Jessica Carvo, Kim Miller, Courtney Cullen, Linda Switach, Laura Neuburger and Stacey McPartland played a very aggressive game and won most of the 50/50 balls. The defense of Nicole Juray, Amanda Gerome, Tara Bernot, Ashley Valente, Corrine Burtis and Michelle Maier were very stingy in allowing the opposing team the opportunity to penetrate their zone and on the rare occasions they did. Goalie Katie Lyons was there to turn them away.
The Flames' next game is tomorrow, Oct. 30 at 1:50 p.m. on the main field at Allen Park.
