The newly-formed girls U-10 travel soccer team, the Farmingdale Lady Riders, took first place at the East Meadow/Ref-Fuel Tournament.
The team, which boasted a record of 5-0, defeated Rockville Centre 9-1 and Bethpage 3-2 on Saturday, Aug. 28. The following day, they shut out Happauge 2-0 and Garden City 3-0. They captured first place by Sunday's end, although they had their final game on Monday (which they dominated and won against New Hyde Park by a score of 6-0, their third shutout of the tournament.)
When it was all over, the Lady Riders had outscored their opponents 23 to 3.
Forwards Jenna Block, Lauren Broten, Shannon Haas, Alyssa Kildare, Alyssa Mercante, Katie Rocks and Brittany White contributed 18 goals in a relentless offensive attack.
The midfield, led by Nicole Amato, Michele Marino, Amanda Pratt and Candace Rossi, completely controlled the center of the field and contributed four goals and numerous assists in the team's victories. The defensive work of fullbacks Nicole Conway and Jackie Gunn, was almost flawless; they even scored a break-away goal. The defense was held together by a tremendous effort and numerous spectacular saves by goalkeeper Kelly Macagnone.
Coaches Tom White, Larry Block and Jim Broten noted that they were "extremely pleased" with the progress and skill of the players.
