Douglas Sedgley, 66, of Bethpage, died on Aug. 16, 1999. Born in Scotland, he served in the Army and graduated from Newark College of Engineering. He was a designer for Otis Elevator, a rocket developer for the Hughes Tool Co. and an engineer for the Marquardt Corp. Mr. Sedgley joined Grumman in 1963 where he was a major contributor to the development of the control system for the Grumman Lunar Excursion Module. He also worked with a group of engineers to bring Apollo 13 safely back to Earth after an onboard explosion. He worked in the Star Wars program and was a recognized authority in the development of specialized pumps to produce extremely high vacuums. He was also the author of a number of papers on the subject. Mr. Sedgley retired in 1999. Husband of Margaret (McAllister). Father of Paul and Donald and the late Jeffrey.
