New York State Senators Kemp Hannon and Charles J. Fuschillo have announced that the state's next clothing tax-free week will run from Sept. 1-7 and will include all clothing and footwear selling for under $500 per article.

"I encourage people to buy new school clothes for their children during the first week of September. These tax holidays not only offer a savings for our families and seniors but also allow us to give a boost to our merchants," says Hannon.

"This tax-free week provides families with extra purchasing power when buying new clothing and shoes for their children's coming school year," Senator Fuschillo, who is a member of the Senate Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee, said. "In addition to previous and forthcoming tax-free weeks which will save taxpayers over $100 million, tax-free shopping also provides a welcomed revenue boost for New York's merchants and retailers."

The exemption waives the state's 4 percent sales tax on clothing and footwear, and also allows counties and cities within New York State to exempt their local portion of the sales tax. Nassau County has opted not to waive the county sales tax so there will be a 4.5 percent sales tax on items bought in Nassau County.

For shoppers, the new budget again eliminates sales tax Jan. 15-21 of next year on clothing and footwear priced under $500.

Sales tax on clothing and footwear priced under $110 will be eliminated permanently by the state, beginning March 1.
