The Mets, led by Brian McPartland and Keith Karlsen, captured the Farmingdale Baseball League Intramural Boys Senior League Championship by crushing the A's 16-5 in the third game of the best of three series.
The Mets finished first in the National League with a 14-3 record during the regular season. They then won their two playoff games to earn the bid to the World Series. The A's, who finished second in the American, upset the Red Sox by defeating them twice in a row to advance to the finals.
The first two games were hard fought nail-biters with each team winning one in their final at bat.
Trailing 10-3 early in Game 1, the Mets bounced back to win 12-10 on Brian McPartland's two-run single which brought home Donny Fowler and Kevin Galante with the deciding runs. Fowler had slammed a bases loaded triple to tie the score moments earlier during the six run sixth inning. McPartland held the A's scoreless over the last three innings to pick up the win. Catcher Colin Jones helped keep the A's from pulling away by nailing four would-be base stealers as the Mets fought back.
Game 2 was a see-saw battle in which the lead changed hands six times. In the bottom of the seventh, Angelo Cifarelli led off with a double and scored on Chris Contorno's fly ball to left, giving the American Leaguers the 14-13 victory.
In the final game, it came down to pitching. The A's had used up their two best pitchers, Rob Surace and Mike Hill, but the Mets were able to send their ace, Keith Karlsen, to the mound for the decisive game.
Taking a 12-2 lead in the fourth inning, the Mets ended the suspense early. When the A's mounted a bases loaded threat in the bottom of the sixth, Donny Fowler grabbed a line drive toward the middle and turned it into an unassisted double play to end the game and touch off the Mets' celebration.
McPartland, Galante, Karlsen, Rob Marino and Joe Racioppi each drove in two runs in the clincher. On the mound, Karlsen struck out eight and yielded only five hits as he cooled off the A's potent offense.
The Mets' post season batting leaders were:
Keith Karlsen (.714 BA, 12 runs, 1 HR, five RBI), Brian McPartland (.563, 11 RBI, one HR), Kevin Galante (.500, six RBI), Jawanza Richards (.444, four RBI), James Wozny (.417 and Matt Olesik (.333, four RBI). Wozny has been on four championship teams in the last four years. Joe Nocella, who missed the first game, reached base five out of six times and scored three runs. He also was a workhorse on the mound during the regular season, tying for the team lead in innings pitched with 23.
Outfielders Leon Gayle and Victor Babadilla made good plays in the field to help the cause. Bobadilla also slammed a homer in the playoff win over the Cardinals and Gayle used his speed to lead the team in triples.
Manager Don Karlsen was pleased but not surprised by the team's successful season. "Our first practice was April 1, on a damp, dreary day. But when everyone showed up to practice, I knew that this group of boys wanted to play baseball. They worked hard at practice, kept improving and the championship is their reward. I'm very proud of this team."
Karlsen was assisted by Coaches Tim Jones and Jim Galante.
The Mets celebrated their championship season with a party at Annabella's in Farmingdale.
