Farmingdale's Long Island Rail Road train station was the kickoff point for the Nassau part of the Paumonok Bicycling Club's Bicycle Long Island event, held on May 2, which is designed to promote bicycling on Long Island as well as educate cyclists about safety techniques.

The event also served as a reminder of the Mile-A-Minute Murphy celebration which will take place on Saturday, June 26 at the newly refurbished Farmingdale train station. One hundred years ago, Charles M. Murphy rode his bicycle an entire mile in 57.8 seconds (over 60 miles an hour behind a LIRR train.
The anniversary celebration, sponsored by the Farmingdale/Bethpage Historical Society and Farmingdale Village, will consist of a day-long schedule of events. An Antique Flea Market will be held at the Farmingdale Railroad Station from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. At noon a Bicycle Decorating Contest will take place at the Village Green on Main Street. At 3:30 p.m. the Bicycle Contest awards will be presented. The Long Island Banjo Society will be performing between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The highlight of the day will be a dedication ceremony at the Main street Clock Tower, in which Mayor Trudden will be joined by William Johnston, the village historian; numerous other elected officials from the State and County; and LIRR officials in commemorating the event. The dedication will begin at 3 p.m.
The Farmingdale Post Office, in commemoration of the anniversary, will issue a First Day Cover on Saturday. At the end of the day the Long Island Wheelmen have sponsored time trials, one-mile bike race. Registration for the trials will start at 4 p.m. at the Main Street Clock Tower. Throughout the week preceeding the anniversary celebration local shops will be having special Mile-A-Minute Murphy sales.
