Junior Prom is wonderfully exciting - unless you're the parent of a teen. Then, the thoughts of it can send shudders of apprehension down your spine. Will that son, so handsome in his tuxedo, or the lovely daughter, glowing in her prom dress, return home safely, tired but happy, after a night of dancing and fun, or will a call from the police or the hospital shatter this idyllic picture?
Concerned for our children's safety, we called the Nassau County Bar Association's Speakers Bureau for an attorney to talk to parents and students regarding parents' liability and consequences for students of reckless behavior that may occur after leaving the prom.
Attorney Joe Hanshe was the hit of the Junior Prom Informational Meeting. His talk touched on every issue we wanted parents and students to hear. He obviously cares deeply about the welfare of young people and knows how to reach them. Teachers reported that the next day students were discussing the issues he raised.
Word of the program has reached other school districts with similar concerns, requesting information on Hanshe's presentation. We believe that parents and students who heard his talk will have a dialogue that will allow both of them to face prom night with an easier mind.
