(This letter is a response to a response from the South Farmindale Water Commissioner)

First let me say I stand by everything that was written in my Liberty commentary that appeared in your Feb. 26 edition and I will be happy to make my "misinformation" available to the South Farmingdale water commissioners.

I wrote that commentary to inform those who live here, never dreaming that this board of commissioners and its chairman were not familiar with the environmental history of Farmingdale wells. To further enlighten them, according to Nassau County Health Department documents Well #1-1 "was shut down on Dec. 8. 1976 and reopened on March 1, 1977. Well #6-1 and #6-2 were shut down on Jan. 3, 1977, and reopened April 8, 1977." These wells were closed because of "organic chemical contamination."

The commissioners claim, "To date, the South Farmingdale Water District has never had to take a single well off line because of any such situation." They must never say never and are also quite presumptuous to accuse me of not checking, when it is they who are not informed of the facts.

Would the commissioners and their chairman McCormack have us believe that contaminants are not leaching into our acquifers? Nowhere in the article did I accuse the South Farmingdale Water District of serving up contaminated water today.

I quote from a 1986 US Geological Survey report: "The demand for ground water in east-central Nassau County, a highly developed area that includes parts of Bethpage, Plainedge, Hicksville, Levittown, Plainview and Farmingdale has placed an increasing stress upon the underlying aquifers. Ground water in some areas has already been contaminated, and the upper glacier aquifer is no longer a suitable source of public supply in these areas. Isolated occurrences of contamination of the underlying Magothy aquifer also have been documented."

The article I wrote was a very long one and it imparted a great deal of information, which I felt residents had a right to know. This commentary took issue with many past and present agencies and their inadequacies. The South Farmingdale Water District was merely one of a long list.
