The Columbus Lodge #2143 OSIA softball committee held its winter meetings to discuss the 1999 Golden Lions' softball schedule. The meetings centered around expansion of the Lion's participation in charitable softball events, which the committee overwhelmingly approved.
The committee unanimously voted to participate in a charity softball tournament run by New York Yankee's David Cone, in Central Park. Last year, the proceeds were donated to the Alzheimer's Association. Also, the committee discussed a fund-raising softball game against several New York Jets, to be held in Massapequa. If held, the proceeds would benefit the Arthritis Foundation.
In addition, the Columbus Lodge #2143 OSIA will look to repeat their victorious performance at the Easter Seals Softball Classic and will look to take home the trophy at the Ronald McDonald House softball tournament. "We're going to win it all this year," predicted Daron Tripoli, shortstop for the Columbus Lodge!
Last year, the Golden Lions' participation in charitable softball events enabled Long Island and New York City area charities to raise over $106,000. "We did good, but we can do better," said Pete Gisonda, co-chairman of the Lions.
Throughout the off season, the Columbus Lodge Golden Lions have continued to make their presence felt in the community by assisting in off the field charitable events (i.e. the Telicare Telethon, PBS Winter Pledge Drive and Nassau County Special Olympics). "We've been busy this winter," said Ed Bochynski, co-chairman of the Lions.
Members of the Columbus Lodge are scheduled to begin weekly Sunday morning softball "pick-up" games in April at Woodward Parkway Elementary School in Farmingdale. These games run through Oct. 1 and residents of Farmingdale and Massapequa, of all ages and ability are welcome to play. For further information contact Pete Gisonda at 798-3972.
