I read with interest a recent public letter addressed to Supervisor Venditto from two realtors, Terri Catapano Black, president and Carole Ann Catapano, vice-president of Bethpage's Century 21 and their other two officers.
The letter spoke about the impending heliport to be erected by Northrup Grumman Corp., and Cablevision. While it may be true that no environmental review has yet taken place, nor special use permits obtained or even public hearings, I feel this would be a great addition to our area. It would be far better than a dozen Goya or Ronzonis trucking in wares and congesting our streets and roadways more than they are now.
The helicopter passenger business has been successfully run here in the US and in Europe for almost 50 years. Since 1953, they now fly faster, higher and are more comfortable. Heliports are cleaner than trucks, create no garbage, and would even aid in the movement of working people to the area.
I would hope the residents of Bethpage give serious thought to not condemning a money-producing business like a heliport in favor of businesses that need warehouses and trucks.
In addition, the Navy-Grumman property, having always been an area given to air and space travel, should really be grandfathered in respect to helicopter flights.
