The following letter was sent to Carol Browner, administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and was forwarded by the signatories to the Observer for publication.
Farmingdale is a wonderful community. It has a village, a vibrant downtown, great schools, and parks filled with children. Farmingdale has a lot of history from agriculture to aviation. Farmingdale continues to adapt and grow, revitalizing its Main Street central business district, preserving stately homes, preventing blight, and promoting business development for a stable economic base.
The history of aviation has also left this community the legacy of the Liberty Aviation Superfund site on Motor Avenue. It is a stain on our community, hurts our image, and without immediate cleanup, an impediment to positive redevelopment opportunities. It is past time to bring this land back to productive economic use, contribute taxes, employ community members, and to clean up the aesthetic blight. None of this can happen until the EPA brings this project to a close. Ten years (waiting for this) is far too long. For the economic welfare of the community, the site must be cleaned up now. We cannot do our job until you do yours.
On behalf of the Farmingdale community : South Farmingdale, East Farmingdale, West Farmingdale and the Village, we urge you to take immediate action.
