In what has to be one of the most exciting games of the year, the Farmingdale Hawks senior team staged a remarkable come-from-behind victory over the Hornets of Valley Stream.
This was a game that saw the Hawks play two completely different styles of football in each half. Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Hawks came out in the second half fired up. Pat Friszell took the opening kickoff 70 yards for the Hawks first score. The Hornets took the ensuing kickoff and returned it for another touchdown. But that would be the end of the Hornets scoring. The Hawks defense, led by Chris and Brian Harris, Brian Mason, Greg DeStafano and Bob Manzollilo shut down the Hornets running game, enabling Shawn OBrian, Danny Hilton and Kevin Piechota to intercept passes when the Hornets went to the passing game, along with a key fumble recovery by Eric Kessler.
On offense, Chris Hardgrove came up with his finest passing performance, completing six of nine for 165 yards with two touchdown passes to sure-handed receiver Friszell of 25 and 80 yards and Piechota's two receptions. Friszell also had a beautiful diving reception of 25 yards on a key fourth and long situation from Tom Chechilo. The offensive line wore down the Hornets defense enabling lead rusher Chechilo's 10 carries for 94 yards and Danny Hilton's five carries for 41 yards to eat up big yardage.
With the score Hornets 22, Hawks 19 and 5 minutes remaining in the game, Joe Bacani blew through the Hornets line and blocked the punt, that was recovered by Chris Harris. Three plays later, Chechilo went in with the winning touchdown.
Thanks go to the parents and cheerleaders for their strong support.
