Born Marie McGinniss in Brooklyn in 1920, she grew up in S. Ozone Park. After obtaining her registered nurse's degree in 1942, she joined the Army Nurse Corps. During WWII, she served in the European Theatre hospitals in Ireland, England, France and Belgium. She was discharged as a First Lieutenant. She worked briefly for American Overseas Airlines.
