As Farmingdale residents with a son who plays travel soccer at Allen Park, we are writing this letter because we are very concerned about the danger at the park. With soccer and softball being played side by side, I am worried about the safety of the spectators and kids from foul balls by the softball players.
At our son's game this afternoon first my wife got hit with a foul ball on her ankle. Later, I also got hit on the ankle by another foul ball. My wife has a swollen and painful ankle as a result of being hit. I fell backwards and bruised my back and landed on my cell phone, causing the phone to break.
Even worse, the softball players said that we caused the injuries and were just acting. We were told that we had no right being where we were and the softball players laughed at my wife because she was in pain and in tears. I was told I should have been looking where I was walking and that, if so, I wouldn't have been hit.
One day one of the kids will be hit and hurt. These players will get their ball and continue to play, not caring about who gets hurt. The attitude of the park is both groups have a right to play. I do not know what the solution should be, but one day someone may be seriously hurt. It is not the time to come up with a solution after someone is taken away in an ambulance.
My only regret is that we have seen foul balls nearly missing kids and parents in the past and all we did was shake our heads. Maybe if the Farmingdale Wolverine Soccer Club and parents complain to the town, this matter will be reviewed and a fair and equitable solution can be formulated.
