I am writing to you because I am greatly concerned about the acid rain that is ruining our environment. Not many people are aware of the damage it is causing and perhaps letters like this one printed in newspapers will make people realize the importance of this problem.
Acid rain is caused from pollution emissions from motor vehicles, industry and primarily, electric power generating plants. It is destroying our forests and polluting our lakes and rivers. Much of the acid rain affecting New York is caused by midwestern power plants burning dirty coal with inadequate pollution controls. The bottom line is, acid rain is getting into our water and ultimately into us.
If Senators Alfonse D'Amato and Daniel Patrick Moynihan could press hard for legislation in this session of Congress, the destruction of acid rain could be stopped. We need action on acid rain now!
