Alexandra Brooke Winthrop Rubinger, religious instructor at Congregation Beth-El, Massapequa, died on Aug. 21 after a year-and-a-half battle with cancer. She was 44.
The wife of Rabbi Ephraim Rubinger, the current spiritual leader of the congregation and former rabbi of Oceanside Jewish Center, she was well-known and beloved in the Jewish community. More than 500 people attended her funeral last Sunday. Aside from her husband, she leaves two children - Elisheva, 13 and Nathan, 5. She is the daughter of F.R. Ruskin and the late Al Winthrop, and the sister of Tony and Diana, all from the Washington, D.C. area.
One of the things that was most distressing to her during her battle with cancer was the fear that cancer would consume her and that nothing would be left for donation and transplantation. Miraculously, her corneas were saved. Her husband used that donation as his theme when he eulogized her, discussing the type of world two people would see now through Alex's eyes.
An avid gardener, Alexandra could be found planting for the future on her very last day. She also expressed deep concern about social inequities, and was supportive of Congregation Beth-El's plans to create the first Kosher food pantry on Long Island.
Contributions in her memory can be made to the Congregation Beth-El, 99 Jerusalem Avenue, Massapequa, NY 11758 and marked for the food pantry, or to Cancer Care of Long Island in Woodbury.
