Great weather and outstanding divisional play highlighted the last two weeks of softball action at Allen Park. The following is a recap of games played on July 31.

Thirsty Beverage continued its fine recent play by defeating Granny O'Shea's. In the other early game, Buddy's Sandtrap defeated McCourt and Trudden. J-2 Lounge, with Big Hal Edelman in street clothes, posted a hard fought victory over a much improved Taormina Pizza 11-8. J-2 turned a 7-2 deficit into their ninth win with clutch late inning hitting by the entire team. Moby Drugs closed to within a half a game of first place by pounding a short handed Barboy team for their eighth win of the year. Barboy was led by the defense of Frank Pepe and the hot bats of Bill Treubig and Don Llyod (home run).

The nightcap was highlighted by Ken's Fitness Centre 6-4 win over first place Darien Press. Carmine Lanzaro and Kris Solberg both pitched outstanding games and Mike Maisano's eighth inning RBI triple provided Ken's with their margin of victory. Bruce Coonan (triple) and Dom Bello led Ken's offense and the fine defense of Frank Ortolani and Bob Cruickshank backed Carmine's pitching. Darien had multiple hit games by Rich D'Amico, Joe Algerio, Mike Stein and George Krug but dropped to 9-2. The other late game had Barco Construction and Morgan Truck Body battle to a 10 inning 15-15 tie. Barco was led by the hitting of Dennis Ryan, Bob Meyers, Bob Diamond and Bill Mulligan, Morgan's defense was led by the fine fielding of Pete Mendelson and bill "the Dog" Johnson who killed numerous Barco rallies with great plays.

Last week's (Aug. 7) action was highlighted by Buddy's Sandtrap victory, over J-2 Lounge. Sandtrap reached the 500 mark as they endured an eight run last inning rally by J-2 which drop to 9-2. Ken's kept their championship hopes alive with a come-from-behind win over Granny O'Shea's. That's Ken's fifth win in a row as they are peaking at the right time.

The middle games saw Thirsty roll to their third straight victory with a 10-3 win over Barboy. Barco Construction gained a 9-0 forfeit victory over McCourt and Trudden who could not field a team.

The nightcap featured a battle for first place in the American League with Moby Drugs defeating Darien Press 7-5 for their 4th win in a row. Moby was led by Paul Nardone's long home run as well as key hits by John Gaffney, Walter Celewski and Dan Mascia as they rallied from a late 4-2 deficit to take over first place in the division. Darien's Rich D'Amico led the offense with 3 hits and Bobby Schubert, Joe Algerio, Kris Solberg and Mike Stein all had multiple hit games as Darien falls to 9-3. Morgan Truck Body rallied for 3 runs by the ninth to defeat Taormina Pizza 8-6.
