Ronald Gordon, 32, died on May 18, 1998. He was the 1977 Nassau Poster Boy for Duschenne Muscular Dystrophy. He grew up in Farmingdale and attended school at the Human Resources Center in Albertson graduating as valedictorian. He was a journalism major at Hofstra University and earned a Phi Beta Kappa scholarship and became the first disabled pledge at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. While on campus he played intramural wheelchair hockey, lip-synched Bruce Springsteen songs and ran for homecoming king placing second in the election. He rolled his wheelchair alongside the horse at the head of the homecoming parade.
Mr. Gordon commuted to his job at Hofstra. He was responsible for having LI Bus reschedule one of its first lift-equipped buses to accommodate his work schedule. He interned at News12 LI and Newsday and became free lance sportswriter for local newspapers. He held an interview with Hank Aaron.
Mr. Gordon is survived by his father Frank, his mother Joyce and his brothers Scott and Kenneth. Funeral at St. Kilian's RC Church. Interment Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Ronald Gordon Special Needs Trust Fund, 100 Birch Ave., Farmingdale, NY 11735.
