The Twin Counties Ice Hockey Team on April 12 took the Gold Medal in the Can-Am Challenge Cup in Lake Placid. The players were selected from the Nassau-Suffolk area, and included four players from the Farmingdale High School Junior Varsity Hockey Team: defensemen James Capuano and Shawn Raleigh, forward John DiGiulio and goalie James McCaffrey.
The games were played over four days April 9-12 at the Olympic Training Center at Lake Placid, New York. The team was entered in the Bantam Division and faced tough competition from teams from Florida, Massachusetts, Staten Island, Elmsford and Ontario.
The final game was played on the 1980 Olympic ice rink against Braintree, Massachusetts. It was an exciting game, in which forward Scott Ferguson scored four goals and another goal was scored by defenseman Chuck Hudson. Twin Counties emerged victorious in a final score of 5-3.
Raleigh, the team captain, accepted the gold medal for the team. In addition, individual medals were presented to him and the rest of the team: Scott Loechner, Ryan Hodkinson, James Cisler, Timothy Hirsch, Alexandra Poitras, Joseph Kiesling, Nicholas Mitchell, William Votta, Phil Ginexi and Elvis Tominovic. Medals were also presented to Head Coach Dennis Ferguson, and Assistant Coaches Richard Dean, Joseph Lombardi and Rich Seeger.
