Stanley C. Armour died peacefully at his home on April 24, 1998. Husband and best friend of Stella for more than 50 years. Joseph W. McKnight, of W. Babylon, former Pennsylvania Railroad Locomotive Fireman, retired employee of the Agricultural and Technical College at Farmingdale, and officer and firefighter with over 50 years in the fire service, both in Lakemont, PA and E. Farmingdale, died at Brunswick Hospital, Amityville after a short illness. He was 78 years old.
Chief Joseph "Mac" McKnight was born and raised in Altoona, PA and worked as a locomotive fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 17 years. He was also a member of the Lakemont Fire Dept. including service in the Logan Township Forest Firefighting Crew.
After emigrating with his family to W. Babylon in 1954, he found employment as a painter/decorator and worked for the Agricultural and Technical College at Farmingdale (now SUNY Farmingdale), until retiring in 1976.
Chief McKnight joined the E. Farmingdale Fire Dept. in January 1956 and rose throught the ranks as Lieutenant and Captain of the Rescue (1964-1966), 4th Assistant Chief (1969-1970), 3rd Assistant Chief (1970-72), 2nd Assistant Chief (1972-1974), 1st Assistant Chief (1974-1976) and Chief of Department from 1976-1978. He was a charter member of the East End Exempt Fireman's Benevolent Association, LI Association of Fireman's Benevolent Associations, Southern NY State Fire Police Association, a longtime member of the Southern NY Volunteer Fireman's Association, Fireman's Association of the State of NY, South Shore Volunteer Fire Departments Association, NYS Association of Fire Chiefs and past member of the International Fire Chief's Association. He enjoyed being E. Farmingdale F.D.'s Santa Claus and delighted in visiting local nursing homes, the Suffolk Developmental Center in Melville and Vietnam Veterans organizations at Christmas along with the EFFD crew.
With a deep and abiding civic pride, Chief McKnight was also a member of Bethpage Masonic Lodge No. 975 F.&A.M., the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Workers and an associate member of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 11.
Loving and dedicated husband of Isabel (Coho) McKnight; beloved father of Cynthia (McKnight) DeVaul and husband Jack of Brentwood, Doc McKnight and wife Lenore of Holbrook; spiritual dad to Janet (King) Holman and Maureen (King) Kramer both of E. Farmingdale; cherished grandfather of John James DeVaul of Renovo, PA, Jodi (DeVaul) Yee of Bayshore and Stephanie Holman of E. Farmingdale; and devoted great-grandfather of seven. He is also survived by brothers and sisters Jay McKnight, Glenn McKnight, Beverly McKee and Bonilee Irwin, all of Altoona; and many loving neices and nephews.
