A tough, team-oriented defensive effort from St. Anthony's sophomore-laden Junior Varsity squad held Frmingdale to just six goals from three players as the Dalers fell to the Friars Sunday in their final game of the Long Island Lacrosse League at Oceanside.

Scoring for Farmingdale was sophomore's Sean Sweeney and Phil Alesia, with 3 and 2 goals respectively, and 7th-grader Scot Gale with a goal. Steve Maier, John Castellane, Ryan Gaughegan, Sweeney and Gale each had an assist.

"St. Anthony's, which didn't have a close game this entire indoor season, was a deep, finished team with only two freshmen out there," coach Reg Gale said. "We were able to compete pretty strongly when we had Sean, Phil, Scot and our two big freshmen, John Gaffney and Maier, together on the field. But other than Gaughegan, we just weren't able to match up physically with our second and third midfield lines.

"If we had passed better, we could have overcome that. But we didn't."

Defensively, the Dalers got their normal dose of strong play from sophomores Frank Canizio and Chris Piechota. And freshman goalie Corey Gibbons had one of his strongest games of the season, fending off several hard shots.

Also playing well were Paul Zimmerman, who shook off several hard hits in transition; Andrew Broten; Mike Nocerino; Josh Ambrosio; Chris Moore; and Jim McNamara.

For the season, Sweeney led all scorers with 11 goals in four games, followed by Alesia with 10 goals in six games, Steve Pullen with nine goals in five games, Gale with seven goals in five games, and Maier and Gaffney, who each had five goals in five games.
