Flames Post Winning Season

The Farmingdale Flames have completed their inaugural season playing in Long Island Junior Soccer's Southwest Suffolk, Girls U10 division. The Flames posted a 6 win, 1 loss, 3 tie season, playing in an 8 team conference.

The girls showed continued improvement in both their teamwork and skill levels throughout the season, with their only loss coming in the opening week. Corrine Burtis, Samantha Lyons and Ally Mulcahy put pressure on the opposing team's defenses throughout the season. Midfielders Nicole Cadena, Jessica Carvo, Nicole Juray, Stacey McPartland and Michelle Maier did a great job of moving the ball downfield, exhibiting fine passing and ball handling skills. They took advantage of their speed to constantly change the direction of the play.

A strength of the team was the play of the defensive unit. The Flames allowed only 5 goals-against all season, with three of them coming in one game ( a 3-3 tie vs. Plainedge). With Tara Bernot, Monica Daniels and Katie Lyons on defense and Laura Neuburger and Ashley Valente at stopper, opposing teams were often unable to even take a shot on goal in many situations. When they were able to penetrate the defense, goalie Leanne Darcy stepped up and stopped them. She made several fine saves throughout the season.

The coaches, Brian Mulcahy, John Juray and Jim Neuburger noted that they want to congratulate the team on their fine play throughout their first season together as a travel team. The growth seen by the coaches in their skill levels, competitiveness and desire is a tribute to the girls. They added that the players are a fine group of young ladies who will continue to learn as they play together in the future. The coaches said they would also like to thank the parents of the Flames for allowing them the opportunity to coach their children.
