As the warming effects of El Nino wash over Long Island and create warm January days, everyone seems to be taking the time to throw around a baseball and partake in spring-type activities. That's just fine with Farmingdale Baseball league as they get set to start another season of baseball and softball activities for the youth of Farmingdale, the 46th consecutive year for the organization.
Registration for this year's activities will take place this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Sons of Italy, Columbus Lodge, on the second floor, and on Wednesday and Thursday evening, Jan. 14 and 15, at the East Cafeteria of Howitt JHS, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will be an additional registration on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Sons of Italy.
The executive board and the executive committee of the league have been working over the fall and winter months to prepare and schedule an exciting season for the children of the community. The league will run baseball and softball leagues for boys and girls from ages six to 18, in various configurations: boys and girls, age six, play in the Instructional League, with an emphasis on teaching the children the rules of the game; boys age seven play in Pinto 7, where the coaches pitch and boys age eight play in Pinto 8, where the players begin to pitch; boys ages nine and 10 play in the Mustang League, where full baseball rules are implemented; boys ages 11 and 12 play in the Bronco League, where the basepaths are extended to 70 feet and the pitching distance is slightly increased; boys ages 13 to 15 play in the Boys Senior League, with full baseball rules; boys 16 to 18 will participate in travel teams sponsored by the league; girls ages seven through nine play in the Ponytail Farm League; girls ages ten through 13 play in the Ponytail Intermediate league; and girls ages 14 through 18 play in the Ponytail Senior League.
