Lions Finish First in Fall Season
The Farmingdale Lions completed the regular Fall 1997 soccer season 6-1 in a very competitive boys junior division. The team displayed strong defense, good passing and timely goal scoring. The team`s offense was led by Matthew Kessler, Steven Morales and Peter Ostrander. Consistent play at halfback and forward included Michael Cornacchia, C.J. Craig, Robert Garone, Frank Oddo and Sahil Sandhu. Solid team defense was anchored by Luke Fellin and R. J. Looner. The two main goal keepers were Nick DeFrancisco and Andrew Misuraca.
After the successful regular season, the Lions faced strong competition in the playoffs from the Jaguars, the Metro Stars and the Fury. In the quaterfinals, the Jaguars showed strong goalkeeping and good team defense, but the Lions won on goals by Peter Ostrander, Steven Morales and Matthew Kessler. The Lions defeated the Metro Stars in the semifinals on goals by C.J. Craig, Steven Morales and Matthew Kessler. In the playoff finals against the Fury, the Lions prevailed on goals by Michael Cornacchia, Matthew Kessler and Steven Morales.
The team`s final 9-1 record and playoff success has been attributed to solid teamwork and a strong team defense that allowed just one goal in the three playoff games. The Lions` coaches, Fernando Morales and Steven Kessler, congratulated their team for their hard work and fine achievements throughout the season.
