The Farmingdale Hawk seven- to eight-year-old team last Sunday won the Nassau/Suffolk Football League Championship with a thrilling 8-0 win over Levittown.
The game was scoreless until the Hawks scored with 40 seconds left in the game. The contest was a defensive battle for Farmingdale all day against the tough, well-coached Red Devil team that scored three touchdowns against the Hawks and defeated them on opening day.
Farmingdale's defense was outstanding and tired out Levittown all day. Middle linebacker Jack Reynolds was all over the field, and led teammates Mitchell Dittmar, Joe DeClemente, James Hogan, Ryan Boyle, Joe Bagnasco and Matthew Kwapisz to the shutout. Outside linebackers Hick Ryan and Jeff Brackman played well on the corners, and Brackman saved a touchdown early in the game.
Levittown kept Farmingdale's offense in check throughout most of the game. However, as the fourth quarter began, the tide began to change. The powerful offensive line of Dittmar, Brian Smolin, Hogan, DeClemente, Boyle, Kwapisz and Chris Alfieri played well. Reynolds' running was relentless, and Lagalante played flawlessly at quarterback, with fullback Ryan opening holes on the final drive. With hearts pounding and time running out, Bagnasco took the ball in for the final touch. He then kicked for the final two-point conversion.
